Recently Terry Dougherty, director of the Spotsylvania Museum, and museum specialist Liz M. Clayton produced a multi-panel display commemorating the 150th anniversary of the battle of the Wilderness. Long time readers of Spotsylvania Memory know that I have been an earnest advocate for telling the story of my ancestors, who arrived in Virginia from England in 1621, and describing their place in state and local history. My family is no more or less special than that of anyone else. But because their experience is so well documented, their lives can in many respects be viewed as emblematic of their time and place.
